The past year at the Diapalante Community Education Centre has been marked by both challenges and achievements. Despite a period of national uncertainty, the Centre’s activities continued, providing stability, learning, and support for the community it serves.
Expanding Learning Opportunities
At the start of the year, the Centre successfully launched its first intensive digital training programmes, reaching more than 80 participants aged between 16 and 53. These courses provided practical skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations—skills that are increasingly important yet often difficult to access for working adults. The strong demand highlights how valuable these opportunities are, and plans are in place to continue and expand them.
At the Centre itself, daily lessons in French, English, mathematics, and computer skills continued to support a wide range of learners, from students to professionals and traders. Each day, around 100 people take part in activities, reflecting the growing importance of literacy, language, and digital skills in everyday life.
Supporting Young People
The Young Leaders programme continued to make a strong impact, with around 100 primary school children benefiting from additional support in French and basic skills. Teenage volunteers led engaging activities, helping younger learners build confidence and improve their performance at school.
The Centre also supported vulnerable young people through its specialised programme for those without access to formal schooling. Participants developed basic literacy and numeracy skills, alongside confidence and social awareness, helping them take important first steps towards greater independence.
Community Initiatives
This year also saw the development of new initiatives designed to address wider community needs. A pilot project providing reusable sanitary products is helping to remove a significant barrier to education for girls, enabling them to attend school more regularly.
In addition, the Centre organised community events to raise awareness of important social issues. These included a large public event addressing the dangers of illegal migration, attended by hundreds of people, and environmental activities such as tree planting to improve local surroundings.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, members organised a cultural evening featuring drama and poetry, exploring themes of women’s roles and responsibilities within society. This event highlighted the Centre’s role not only in education but also in encouraging dialogue and community engagement.
Looking Ahead
As the academic year draws to a close, many learners are preparing for important examinations. The additional support provided by the Centre continues to play a vital role in helping them achieve strong results despite challenges within the wider education system.
