The Diapalante Community Education Centre supports learners who are taking important first steps in literacy while balancing work, family, and personal commitments. Even small gains can make a significant difference in daily life and future opportunities.
Meet Babou
Babou is 28 years old and comes from the Louga region. As a child, he moved to Kaolack to attend a daara, where he dedicated himself to religious studies. Today, he continues to deepen his knowledge while also working each day to support himself.
Babou starts his day early, cycling to the market where he helps stallholders prepare for business. Through this work, he is gradually saving money with the aim of starting a small business in the future.
Recognising that literacy skills are essential for both his plans and his personal development, Babou joined the Diapalante Community Education Centre three months ago. Since then, he has been building his skills step by step.
He can now read and send messages on his phone, carry out basic calculations, and understand many commonly used French words. He is also beginning to use simple phrases in both French and English, giving him greater confidence in communication.
Babou hopes that improving his French will open up additional opportunities, including the possibility of teaching in a private religious school. Equally important to him is the opportunity to learn, connect with others, and grow in confidence. Babou’s story shows how steady progress in literacy can strengthen independence, expand future options, and enrich everyday life.
