The Diapalante Community Education Centre continues to respond to the changing demands of the modern workplace by offering practical training in digital skills. As technology becomes increasingly important across all sectors, access to computer literacy is essential for improving employability and supporting economic development.
A Practical Training Initiative
To meet this need, the Centre organised an intensive digital skills programme, delivered by experienced volunteers with specialist knowledge. Over a focused period, 80 participants were trained in essential computer skills through structured, hands-on sessions.
The programme covered key areas including word processing, spreadsheets, and digital presentations, alongside elements of leadership and entrepreneurship. Sessions were designed to be practical and relevant, enabling participants to apply their learning directly to their work or job search.
Participants came from a wide range of backgrounds including teachers, students, healthcare workers, traders, and job seekers. Training was delivered in small groups to ensure each participant had access to a computer and sufficient individual support.
Access and Impact
The programme ran intensively, with multiple hours of teaching each day over several weeks. Sessions were held both at the Centre and in a nearby village, extending access to those who might otherwise face barriers to participation.
To encourage commitment, a small fee was introduced for this course—unlike the Centre’s usual free provision. This helped maintain high attendance and contributed to basic costs such as refreshments and materials.
