The Diapalante Community Education Centre supports learners over the long term, helping them progress from early challenges in education to achieving ambitious personal and academic goals.
Meet Abdou
Abdou, now 20, first joined the Centre as a child and has remained closely involved ever since. When he began attending, he struggled with French—the language of schooling—and had little knowledge of English. These challenges made it difficult for him to keep up in class and limited his confidence in his own ability.
At the Centre, Abdou found something different: a supportive environment where he could practise, make mistakes, and build his skills without fear of judgement. With encouragement from staff and access to additional learning resources, he steadily improved his language abilities.
Today, Abdou is a fluent French speaker and a confident English speaker. He is now studying English at university—an achievement that reflects both his determination and the support he received along the way.
Building Skills and Confidence
Abdou credits the Centre with helping him succeed academically. The additional lessons and access to learning materials supported his progress in school and played an important role in him passing his final secondary school examinations, enabling him to continue to higher education.
The Centre also gave him access to books, computers, and the internet, which allowed him to practise independently, carry out research, and prepare for important milestones such as his university application. These digital skills have been essential in supporting his education and opening up new opportunities.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
A key part of Abdou’s experience has been the opportunity to practise English through conversation, including with international volunteers. This has strengthened his confidence in speaking and broadened his understanding of the world beyond his local environment.
His involvement in the Young Leaders programme has also been significant. By supporting younger learners, Abdou has developed leadership skills, strengthened his own knowledge, and gained confidence in his ability to guide others.
A Lasting Community
For Abdou, one of the most important aspects of the Centre is the sense of community. He describes it as a place where friendships are formed and where learners support one another like a family. Now studying at university, Abdou continues to return to the Centre during holidays, giving back by helping others with their learning. His journey—from struggling student to confident university learner and role model—demonstrates the long-term impact of accessible, supportive education.
