During Senegal’s rainy season, travel can become challenging due to flooding and heavy storms. The Centre usually takes this quieter period in August to close for a short break, allowing staff to rest. Even so, whenever the doors are open, learners continue to come in, making the most of every opportunity to study.
One such learner is Alioune, a nurse working at a community health post. Recognising the growing importance of technology in healthcare, he began attending the Centre to develop his computer skills.
Alioune travels more than 100 kilometres round trip several times a week to attend lessons. At his workplace, computer equipment is available but largely unused due to a lack of training. Determined to change this, he has committed his time and energy to learning skills that will benefit both his patients and his colleagues.
Thanks to the Centre’s flexible approach, Alioune is able to fit lessons around his demanding work schedule. He is already making steady progress and beginning to apply his new skills in a practical way.
Alioune’s goal is not only to improve his own work but also to support others. As his confidence grows, he plans to share his knowledge with colleagues, ensuring that the available technology can be fully used to improve healthcare services in his community. His experience highlights how access to education at the Centre extends beyond individual learners, creating wider benefits for essential services and the communities they serve.
