Rediscovering Learning with Confidence

The Diapalante Community Education Centre offers a supportive environment for adults who may have had difficult or disruptive early experiences of education. For many, returning to learning is not just about gaining skills, but also about rebuilding confidence and rediscovering a belief in their own abilities.

Meet Khassoum

Khassoum is 32 years old and a committed member of the Diapalante Community Education Centre. Growing up in a family with limited financial means, he faced a number of challenges from an early age—particularly in education.

As a young child, Khassoum struggled at school and found the experience discouraging. Feeling unable to progress, he left school at the age of nine and began working in his uncle’s mechanical workshop. There, he developed strong practical skills and gained valuable experience repairing vehicles.

Although he built a solid foundation as a mechanic, Khassoum recognised that not being able to read or write limited both his work and his confidence. Determined to address this, he joined the Centre to begin learning again in a more supportive and encouraging setting.

At Diapalante, Khassoum has found a very different approach to learning—one based on patience, encouragement, and mutual respect. This has helped him regain confidence and engage actively in his studies.

Since joining, he has made clear progress in reading and writing, and in developing his spoken French. He practises regularly using his phone, reinforcing what he learns at the Centre. While he is still building his skills, he is already able to communicate effectively in simple messages and conversations, which has brought him a strong sense of achievement.

These improvements are already having a positive impact. Khassoum is more confident in his daily interactions with customers and friends, and he takes pride in the progress he is making. The friendships he has formed at the Centre also provide encouragement and a sense of belonging.

As a father, Khassoum is especially motivated by the future of his daughter. He is determined that she will have access to education and opportunities that he was unable to benefit from himself. His journey is helping to break that cycle, creating new possibilities for the next generation. Khassoum’s story illustrates how access to supportive education can transform not only skills, but also confidence, outlook, and family aspirations. Through his determination, he is building a more positive future—for himself and for those around him.
