The Diapalante Community Education Centre supports children over many years, helping them overcome early challenges and grow into confident learners—and, in time, leaders who support others.
Meet Sokhna
Sokhna first joined Diapalante’s after-school activities at the age of nine. At the time, she was a cheerful and hardworking pupil, but she faced difficulties in reading and mathematics. These challenges affected her confidence and made learning more difficult.
Through the Young Leaders programme, Sokhna took part in small-group activities designed to support learning in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Working alongside peers and guided by slightly older students, she was able to develop her skills step by step.
She quickly began to make progress, particularly in reading. As her confidence grew, she started to enjoy books and take part in group discussions, strengthening both her understanding and her ability to express herself. In mathematics, practical activities and games helped her grasp key concepts in a more engaging way, supported by a group where asking questions felt natural.
Over the following years, Sokhna continued to attend regularly. Her commitment and steady progress led to a major achievement—success in her primary school leaving examinations. This was a moment of great pride for her family, her school, and the Diapalante community.
Today, Sokhna has moved on to secondary school and has become part of the Young Leaders programme herself. She now supports younger children, offering the same encouragement and guidance that helped her succeed.
Sokhna aspires to continue her education and hopes to become a doctor. With her determination and the support she has received, this ambition feels within reach. Her journey—from a young learner lacking confidence to a role model supporting others—demonstrates the long-term impact of the Centre’s work, and how support at the right moment can transform future possibilities.
