The Diapalante Community Education Centre enables adults with little or no formal education to begin their learning journey with confidence, dignity, and support. For many, learning is not only about acquiring skills but also about building independence and shaping future aspirations.
Meet Oumy
Oumy is 33 years old and works as a street cleaner in Kaolack. She did not have the opportunity to attend school, but she has always had a strong desire to learn. Determined to change her situation, she made the decision to begin learning and joined the Diapalante Community Education Centre.
From the beginning, Oumy has approached her learning with enthusiasm and determination. She attends the Centre three times a week, bringing energy and commitment to every session. She particularly enjoys reading activities and is motivated by a personal ambition—to one day be able to read stories to her future children.
In a short time, Oumy has made excellent progress. She can now recognise and write the letters of the alphabet, in both upper and lower case, and understands the difference between vowels and consonants. She continues to practise regularly between lessons, using her phone to reinforce what she has learned and complete simple exercises set by her teachers.
Although reading and writing messages is still a challenge, Oumy is steadily building her confidence. She is motivated by a clear goal—to become fully literate and independent in her daily life. The supportive environment at the Centre, combined with encouragement from other learners, has helped her stay focused and positive.
Oumy has embraced the belief that it is never too late to learn. Through her commitment and determination, she is transforming her own future step by step.
Her journey highlights the importance of accessible education and a strong community of support. With each new skill she gains, Oumy is moving closer to greater independence and new opportunities for the future.
